NARA

This is the home of the

CVR in N Scale.

I was absent from the hobby since about 1977.
Planning on the CVR started in December of 2003.
I will be updating the website as things progress.

What you will NOT find here:

1. Music and sound effects, I don't know about you, but I usually surf the net later in the evening when others are asleep, I personally hate having to jump for the speaker volume control. So I will not make my guests do it.

2. Funky flash animation or flying letters. I leave stuff like that to the kiddies. I want the site to be able to be opened quickly so that people on dial-up don't have to wait. You came here looking for model railroad info not music videos.

What's New?

October 05, 2011
I have updated the track plan.

September 27, 2011
The wood for the benchwork has been cut to size and laid out on the trainroom floor. New photos have been posted in the Layout Section.

September 25, 2011
Well, the old CVR is now a pile of lumber and several boxes of parts. The room is ready, it is 3.65m along one wall, 3m across and 4.5m up the other wall. The layout will have a similar trackplan just expanded to fit the area. The Benchwork however will be wall hung, with only two legs under the end of the Orangeville module. Plans for the benchwork are being drawn up and new photos have been posted in the Layout Section.

May 31, 2011
The layout is in the proccess of being dismantled.
It will be reassembled in it's new home soon.

May 14, 2010
During my research on the history of the CVR, I have found three old books by Credit Valley Railway President George Laidlaw. These books are now on the History page and downloadable as PDF files.
The layout has been on hold until we finish the MC&H Central in the shop.

Feb. 08, 2010
Well, I am happy to report that last weekend saw the completion of he track laying. Next will be the never ending chore of track cleaning. However, my buddy convinced me I should be using Tortoise switch machines on ALL of my turnouts. So, now we have another four turnouts to rework.

Nov. 26, 2009
Not much new to tell. I have been busy with my company, we moved the shop to a bigger better location this past summer. As far as the layout is concerned, 16 of the 20 turnouts that needed to be replaced have been replaced. Some were replaced with Peco, some with the better quality Atlas "Custom Line" turnouts. Hopefulle next weekend I can get the other 4 replaced.

June 07, 2009
Still in the prossess of testing the trackwork, I am having to replace some old Atlas turnouts with better Peco ones. Just updated the CVR Structures PDF and the Historic Ride PDF.
Now they reflect the new layout.

May 03, 2009
I did a lot of preparation for the first "public" showing of the CVR. The website has been updated with a comparison series of photos on the Layout page.

Mar. 29, 2009
Finished work on the 3D backdrop. I like the final result. In time I will be sealing the joints to make it appear seamless. I continued with the fascia, it is now painted and important features labeled. Also, continued working on my "terra forming", two of the corners are completed. The photos have been added to Layout Page 2.

Feb. 11, 2009
Started work on my 3D backdrop. It is 30cm tall and there will be 2 sections per side. The photos have been added to Layout Page 2.

Feb. 05, 2009
The trackwork is finally complete. The DCC wiring is finished. 14 of the 19 Tortoise switches are wired. The fascia board and curtain is installed, however the fascia is not painted yet. A new series of photos have been added to the layout pages.

Dec. 28, 2008
It has been a long time since the last update, the new layout tracks have all been laid and the layout completely wired for DCC, the Tortoise machines have been wired and are all working. Still tweaking the track, getting the kinks out of it.

May 18, 2008
I did some more work on the layout and some on the website. I posted new photos in the Layout section and cleaned up this website, it should load faster now. Also I updated the CVR Structures PDF and the Historic Ride PDF.

March 02, 2008
Lots of news this month. I have torn up layout #1 and moved it to what used to be my office. The layout is now in a 10x10 room, the entire room will be for the trains. This also means a new track plan.

December 19, 2007
I received a surprise a day or two ago, my father sent me some photos of our old layout from 1973. I have scanned them in and they are now on Layout page 4.

August 23, 2007
Spring and summer have been very busy, real life got in the way. In April I found out I was losing my largest client because she was retiring and closing the shop I was under contract to. The shop closed on May 31st and I opened my own shop on June 1st. working 6 days a week.

April 5, 2007
I was asked to give a talk about Model Railroading at my Rotary club meeting so to help explain what model railroading is, I constructed a small 60cm x 92cm layout. I also created a handout for the talk.
Model Rail Intro PDF.

Feb. 11, 2007
New year and new set of photos in the Gallery. On the layout, I have almost finished the wiring, got a good crew helping me. Two of the fellows from the Muskoka Model Railway Club have come and assisted me with bench work modifications and wiring. I wish to thank Ed Sutherland and Danny Holland.

Dec. 31, 2006
I thought I should update things before a new year happens. Not much to report. I am doing a rebuild of the track work, laying the track on 1/2" plywood and then cookie cutting the plywood. I am doing this to facilitate the mounting of the 14 Tortoise switches. So far only one section is completed. I will be adding more photos to the gallery soon. As for structures, I keep getting more RSlaser Kit structures, they are excellent kits. You can follow my current progress at www.freerails.com in the N Scale forum, until I have time to update the website.

Aug. 10th 2006
Building Dioramas Clinic. Well, it has been a long time since my last update, The main news is that I was talked into giving a clinic at our local train show on Sunday August 13th. I needed to build a small diorama for the clinic, so I looked around my layout for a likely spot. I had read an article in a back issue of The NGSL Gazette, entitled "A Farm For A Change", it featured a small farm on a hilltop. This got me thinking about the back of my layout in the centre of the "wye". I decided on "The Cabin On The Hill". I created a handout for the clinic and have posted it here. Handout.pdf

Below is the original track plan for the Credit Valley Railway.
